Plaisir de Merle
A historic wine farm in the Groot Drakenstein area between Paarl and Franschhoek
The soaring peaks of the Simonsberg Mountain have long served as a guardian to the birth, renaissance and continuing triumph of our Paarl wine estate. It is on the rolling foothills of this majestic mountain that vineyards thrive, producing grapes of exceptional richness that would have found favour with our Huguenot founder, Charles Marais.
One of the Cape’s largest wine farms, Plaisir de Merle wines are nurtured from the cultivars that grow on the east-facing slopes of the towering, sun-shading Simonsberg.
It is often said that good wines begin in the vineyard and at Plaisir de Merle; our outstanding wines begin with the soil. Strict adherences to harmonious integration of vineyard practices with modern winemaking techniques have left renowned winemaker, Niel Bester free to naturally influence the process. A jewel of the Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek Winelands, Plaisir de Merle Wine Estate was established in 1693 and our legacy continues to unfold through renewal and loyalty to the land.
Visit Plaisir de Merle to enjoy a wine tasting of a different kind, experience the activities in the wine cellar or have a look at the historic manor house, one of the cultural treasures of the Cape Winelands.
